Although MegaUpload was taken down by the U.S government IceFilms still has functionality! Link now includes instructions / link for Navi-X but due to the frequent issues, I can only promise that I will try my best to resolve any issues you encounter as many of them are not user related but IceFilms related.
*Note* You are required to watch the videos on top of reading the instructions. I suggest just sitting back and enjoying the watch and then attempting this.
UNTETHERED JAILBREAK RELEASED FOR Version 4.4.4, follow the exact guide below, however, before doing so, connect your Apple T.V 2 to iTunes and click “Restore” It will take it to factory settings and update it to 4.4.4 and then you can do the process as described below!
(skip to 4th paragraph to start JB)
I was completely underwhelmed with my purchase of an Apple T.V 2. Shortly after picking up my iPad 2, I thought that I would be able to use AirPlay on a bunch of apps and view them on my HDTV. Aside from a few select apps this is not possible! In fact all you need to do is purchase the $45 HDMI adaptor for mirroring (everything you do is put up on the big screen) that they sell, it is wired and you don’t need the Apple T.V for that. I realize that in future updates to the iOS they may enable it so that every app can use AirPlay but until then my Apple TV 2 is useless. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, and a WDTV, at $119.99 Canadian and $99.99 U.S for the ATV2 it is not what I consider to be a good buy especially with those other media devices! That is until I discovered something known as JailBreak. I have Jail Broken my original iPhone, and almost everyone with an iPhone has at least heard of something called Cydia, but for those who Jail Broke the first iPhone know that it was a much more involved process that was risky. I’m not saying that Jail Breaking the ATV2 is risky, but it’s not risk free either. I’m not a computer programmer, but do consider my self tech savvy and thought I could add my take on how to go about Jail Breaking the ATV2. I decided to do some research on it and here’s what I found on the ATV2 and JB.
The ATV2 has an HDMI output only, granted this means only newer generation TV’s can support it, this shouldn’t be a huge factor as many people have this technology now, but something to know just in case. It supports 720P playback but trying to play that file wirelessly from your media server is next to impossible. Playing YouTube videos and viewing your pictures is essentially all it does. Here’s where JailBreaking comes in. By JailBreaking you can begin installing third party apps that allow you to do many more things with your ATV2. For my purposes I’m going to outline how to get from Jailbreak, to installing Nito, XBMC and then IceFilms. After that you can search for some other cool third party apps to install, but at least with this you can have literally thousands of hours of T.V and movies to watch.
You need to have a micro USB cable for this to work. If you have either a BlackBerry, Nokia, or most Android phones then you already have this cable. The USB power cord that comes with most models it is the wire you require, just take it apart. You’ll know instantly if it is the correct one. (The other ones don’t come apart, lol) There are different types of Jail Break’s available, this covers version 4.4.4.
I was going to create my own video, but there are enough video’s out there that I just decided to use them along with some of my own. I will try to help you to fill in the blanks as I believe there are some important instructions left out.
Do not plug in your ATV2 until instructed!
JailBreaking
Download “SeasOnPass” here
For those using a Mac, ensure that your file stays zipped as Mac’s will automatically unzip your file for you, when SSH’ing this file over to your Apple T.V 2 unzipped it will not be recognized, quick reference in comment #2 how to fix that here.
AT Step 4 in the Youtube video below when it will ask you to put your ATV2 in DFU mode, without the power cord, plug the ATV2 to your PC with the Micro USB, now holding both PLAY/PAUSE buttons for approx. 7 seconds and then let go. You should be in DFU mode. I have JB a few ATV2’s, one time I was unable to get my ATV2 into DFU mode, searching the internet, a trick I learned was to plug in the power cord and power the unit with the micro USB plugged in to the PC and the ATV2, then unplug the power cord only and hold the Play/Pause buttons and it will enter DFU mode. Remember this is only required if the standard method is not working for you.
AT Step 5 when iTunes opens you have to hold the Shift key and then click restore, then click on the file that was created by SeasonPass, it should be called something like this, “AppleTV2,1_SP_restore” or something similar.
Once completed your ATV2 is now JailBroken and you are now 1/4 of the way done.
Installing NitoTV
Connect your ATV2 to your T.V and turn it on now.
Download “Putty” here
To find your I.P address, connect your ATV2 to your T.V and turn it on, go to Settings, then General, and then About, your I.P address should be listed there.
Start Putty!
xtech’s has created a second more easier to use video, Does the same thing as above, but its a bit easier to follow.
In case you are having trouble following here is the commands he is typing out for you, you can copy and paste them one by one, but say yes to any prompts that come up!
Important Information: Login: Root / Password: alpine
echo “deb http: //atp.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
“echo space quote deb space http colon // atp dot awkwardtv dot org space dot / quote > space / etc / apt / sources dot list dot d / awkwardtv dot list” (thanks to Quasi_Mojo for clarity, this line is same as above but with spacing added for support)
apt-get update
apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV
killall Lowtide
Congrats, you are 2/4 of the way done!
Installing XBMC
Go back into Putty and run command
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
This will make sure all your packages are up to date before you install xbmc and any other plugins you plan to add. Say yes to any prompts!
You have to wait until it is completed of course, I just skipped the final step because I already had it done!
Congrats, you are 3/4 of the way done!
Installing IceFilms
Now go here and complete Step 1, you have already done step 2 and most of Step 3.
Navi-X Repo (Just download the repo and do the same to it as your IceFilms repo)
Download WinSCP here.
Start WinSCP and put in your I.P address with the Username: root and Password: alpine
Click on Login and then Yes and a window like this will open. The left screen is your P.C and the right is the directory folder of your ATV2
You have to place the file you downloaded called repository.googlecode.anarchintosh-projects from your P.C (keep it zipped, some MAC’s automatically unzip the folder, make sure it stays zipped) into a folder called the ” /private/var/mobile/Media” on your ATV2.
Now, start XBMC, and follow my video,
From there you should go to Add-ons, then click Get Add ON then click Anarchintosh Addons then click Video Add Ons then click Ice Films. This should begin the install. Once completed, go all the way out to where ‘system’ was and instead scroll up to go to Videos then click on Video Add-ons then click on IceFilms.
You will have to download ‘the pictures’ folder (automatically prompts you) and you should be good to go, feel free to rate and if you need assistance comment and I’ll try my best to help you!
Finished! Read below for issues that will occur inevitably and how to fix them.
Updated for corrections June 19th, 2011: Sorry for some confusion, there were a few errors I made in the install process that I discovered while JB an APTV2 with a friend. This new version is tested and proven.
Update July 23rd, 2011: Regarding a question below, after everything is said and done and going into the Anarchintosh addon and clicking it, there is nothing there. You get there by going to System/Add-ons/ Get Add-on/ then Anarchintosh Addons but then there is nothing there where there should be Video-Add Ons and then Ice Films. Taking the power plug off and waiting 5-10 minutes solved this problem when I encountered it. Good luck!

Update August 4th, 2011: The problem for some is that Apple T.V keeps searching for updates and you keep getting kicked out what you are watching at the same point it feels like or 5 minutes into watching a show. UpdateBeGone doesn’t work. This is the SSH method.
This seems to be missed by allot of people and as a result some people are updating to 4.3 to stop XBMC from “crashing”…
SSH into your Apple TV 2 using either Putty if your a Windows user or the Mac/Linux terminal
For Linux/Mac users “ssh root@ipaddress” when prompted enter the password, probably alpine if you haven’t changed it.
Backup your hosts file:
cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.bak
If you need/want to restore the original hosts file do the reverse:
cp /etc/hosts.bak /etc/hosts
Paste the below commands, this adds entries to the hosts file that effectively block updates.
echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net" >> /etc/hosts
If you wish to undo these changes you can use a unix utility named sed via ssh using these 3 lines:
sed -i '/127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com/d' /etc/hosts sed -i '/127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com/d' /etc/hosts sed -i '/127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d' /etc/hosts

I had already used Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak and had NitoTV and XBMC installed so it was a breeze to SSH in and add the Icefilms zip file. You video made it a no-brainer. Icefilms is great. The ATV2 interface is better than the web page. There is so much content available there.

I have a problem. I started doing the putty download and screwed up somewhere. I tried going back but now all i keep getting after i enter root/alpine/apt-get update is an error that states;
e: type ‘deb’ is not known on line 1 in source list / etc / apt / sources.list.d / awkwardtv.list
i dont know what i did wrong the first time and certainly dont know how to fix this. any ideas?

First ensure that the spacing is correct, if the spaces in between are wrong then it will give you that message. If you think you are doing this right, type killall Lowtide to cause the operation to restart and then start from the beginning. If that fails, restart the jailbreak process from the beginning. Its not like it damages the Apple T.V 2 or anything. In the end you only lose 10 minutes of your time by doing it again.

Please let me know if this is correct when you try it, I will add it to the blog. If its incorrect please let me know what you used so I can add that to the blog. ALso, I think Cyberduck is a third party app that works for MAC if terminal doesn’t work for any reason.

I’ve followed the routes on you tube to download nito tv and xbmc through windows and putty! it shows on my apple tv that its been jailed broken with the FC sign in the bottom corner of the main menu! I then downloaded on the apple tv nito tv which was fine! But when I go onto the installed items the icon for xbmc is there but nothing works?? it comes up with an error message saying org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
not recognised as a program??? I then looked up on You tube how to download xbmc for apple tv 2, everytime it shows me to enter my IP address, then follow the steps through putty like so!
apt-get update
apt-get install org.xbmc.repo
apt-get update
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
after this process again the same message comes up on Putty:
org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2 not recognised as a program
Is there any advice on what to do next please mate?

Try that instead and see if it works. I remember when I had to ssh over XBMC once I had the ‘mirrors’ line in it and II don’t see that in yours. Plus there should be no need for two lines of ‘apt-get update’ like how yours has. In case this is still wrong just google ‘How to SSH XBMC to Apple T.V 2″ and there should be some more variations on how to get this working.

Connect your Apple T.V to your internet (wireless or wired, your choice) and connect it to the T.V. From there go to ‘About’ on the Apple T.V 2 and look for your I.P address. On WINSCP put that I.P address in that field and WinSCP will start and give you a warning about unauthorized access. Just click on YES. From there, just follow the guide and ask me any more questions you may have! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

After you install Putty you just follow the instructions exactly how I listed them. Install putty, start it, and then go to your Apple T.V and go to about so you can find your I.P address, enter that in Putty, along with username and password when prompted. (it opens a black screen, you will not see the cursor for the password, just enter it) Then watch the video and carefully input the instructions as instructed. Just bear with the enter install, it seems confusing, but take your time and become comfortable with it before you start. Watch the video a few times and just go at it!

Right now it is not just you it is everyone that is down. There was a script update to Ice Quick Stream and an error or script coding was incorrect and ‘anarchintosh’ the main developer (the only dev) is unavailable. So the community has its best and brightest people on it. A temporary patch is up, but it may cause more problems then its worth to attempt. Unfortunately, I took a look at what was involved and realized it is better to wait for a patch rather then trying to help everyone manually fix it. So just wait a day or so and I’m sure everything will be up and running! I’ll keep tabs at the developer and tech support forums and make a comment right here when its up and running!

After you SSH the repo on to your ATV2 you have to go to the instructions where I say to place it in the folder called ‘/private/var/mobile/Media’ after placing it in that folder you have to go to XBMC then you do what I did in the video to install it. After installing it right under the video I have the final install process. (Add-ons/Get Add-ons) I realize in the video I made after I install the zip I got back out to IceFilms, I sorta mumbled after the final install process you go out. I will change that last video to a full and complete install when I get a chance.
These are the final instructions I think you may not be doing after clicking on the Zip like I did in the video.
“From there you should go to Add-ons, then click Get Add ON then click Anarchintosh Addons then click Video Add Ons then click Ice Films. This should begin the install. Once completed, go all the way out to where ‘system’ was and instead scroll up to go to Videos then click on Video Add-ons then click on IceFilms.”

Posted by Marwan Al-Zadjal | July 24, 2011, 4:52 pmI’m researching this issue that you are having right now Marwan, until I can replicate or find the definitive answer, I will recommend that you delete the file, hard reboot the Apple T.V (unplug it) re-SSH it over to /private/var/mobile and try again. This works sometimes, but I work on trying to find out what causes this. I just JailBroke an Apple T.V on Saturday and I had many issues with it but not this one, I eventually got it working…

Posted by blackdson | July 30, 2011, 10:47 amWhere I highlighted in the program (WinSCP) after logging in and clicking ok. You click on that up screen to go back on the right hand side. And then click on the folder on each step. So if you are in the ‘Var’ Folder, you are looking to click on ‘mobile’. Then after finding ‘mobile’ you should search for ‘media’. When you have it, you just pick up the file from the left side and drop it on to the right. Let me know if there is anything else you need.

I did the complete JB process for a friend on Saturday and had the same issue as andy where the ‘IceFilms” get video Add-on options weren’t showing up. A hard reboot and 10 minutes fixed that. This seems like something that popped up after because after Marwan stated his issue I see one other reference to it from that date and yours is now the third. If anyone who uses my guide today or even yesterday can chime in and tell us if you have been successful in getting IceFilms to install that would be a great help.

There have been some zip files posted of just the plugin in this thread that were not in the correct structure to install from – so people just used these to grab the necessary files and copy them to their xbmc install. I suspect they are trying to install these files.
The official repo/plugin is version 1.11 and working.”
Are the two responses I have received thus far. I don’ t have the instructions on how to install from the repo directly but have seen them before, will find them and post them right under this post.

I have jailbroken it using your step-by-step an have had no problem for a few weeks now. Since Apple has put out the new upgrade for the Apple TV I have not updated it to 4.3. When I am watching anything in Icefilms on my Apple TV it crashes out of XMBC and returns to the main Apple TV screen. Now I can;t even get into IceFilms I get “Error Script Failed message:plugin.video.icefilms” I have tried SSH using multiple forums solutions with no sucess. Most forums say the solution is updateBeGone which I have access to through NitoTV. When I try to install updateBeGone through NitoTV it says: “E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run ‘dpkg –configure -a’ to correct the problem” I do that through SSH and still no luck! Any suggestions?

I suspect the script error you are having may not be fixed by this however. Try to uninstall / reinstall IceFilms AFTER you have SSH’d the update be gone instructions IF the script error is not resolved. Even before that, just unplug your Apple T.V 2 for 30 seconds and plug it back in before you do anything. Let me know how it goes, and we’ll try to diagnose the issue from there.

Posted by Jeff | August 5, 2011, 12:39 amAll is not lost! Since you were able to Jail Break your Apple T.V once, I recommend starting over again if you are unsure what is wrong. This may be your best option right now because when you Jailbreak, the step that uses iTunes and SeasonPass actually takes your Apple T.V 2 back to a previous Firmware. I don’t think that your Apple T.V 2 is updated to the newest firmware, but if you are still having issues this may be the best thing. Also, check the usual stuff like internet connection and signal strength. Test a YouTube video, sometimes its easy to forget the little things when trying to figure out the big ones! Let me know how it goes!

I added xmbc fine as well. the problem im having is with icefilms, the ssh seemed to go fine but when i open icefilms and try to navigate to a movie, first of all the metadata 230 mb download wont work, it just goes back to the icefilms screen, and second when i click on any genre (new releases..etc) it wont load any movies! it just goes back to the icefilms screen after a few minutes! please help!

The hope is that they don’t have to manually add all the sources back. I’m kinda disappointed at how things are going as it shakes my confidence to know that if I am planning a movie night or need to watch a show that it might now be working, but fortunately, things like Bit Torrent exist so its not all a loss. Let’s just wait it out and hopefully everything will be sorted out soon!

I have jailbroken a bunch of Apple TV’s for a few guys I work with and they were thinking I was crazy for saying how good Icefilms was working a few weeks back as they have had no sucess getting it to work. I installed NaviX on my Apple TV 2 but that doesn’t even come close to the content that Icefilms offers! Lets hope it gets up and running soon! Why is it donw anyways? Hackers?

To be quite honest, I’ve been trying to read through all the posts, but the actual IceFilms forums are down too. When they moved over, it was a lot more problematic then anyone could have imagined.
I know how you feel, a few people Jail Broke their Apple T.V’s based on my recommendation, and unfortunately, every time they have gone to watch something it has been down. I know they will love it as they watch tons of T.V, but I told them for something they had anyways that was collecting dust, just wait until it comes back up and they won’t be able to live without it!

I learned a long time ago that patience is a virtue. It doesn’t mean that I can hold out forever, it just makes it all that more gratifying when it does come back up. That website you gave is really good. I hate to say it, but the truth is 99% of people just want to make sure its nothing on their end, is IceFilms up or down and when will it be back. I will use it as a resource for sure as the person writing it is way more knowledgeable then me. His estimate is 2 or 3 days more, and I can live with that. Thanks again Jeff!

However, in case I am wrong, it is a few simple clicks to restore your APTV2 to an older firmware. Just search the internet for version 4.3 (4.2.2) download it, and do a ‘Shift+Restore’ in iTunes and restore it from that file! Let me know how it goes!

When i install the plugins Icefilms and it ask me for the install of 234MB of picture and it done downloading. It freeze when it installing it. it not the first time it happening. Ive waited like 10-15 minutes and it always leading me to this error.
Is there a plai can check on the ssh to verify if everything is ok ? Or is it normal?

For a reason that i dont know i hit the menu buttons and it dossent do anything . it jsut freeze. and now since two hours, when i choose a folder in the tv shows categories it just dont show the seasons anymore, but in the movie yes. This just started today for me, and it’s only TV shows–movies are fine. Is this a temporary thing, maybe IceFilms is moving stuff around again?

Let me know if you are up and running, or if you have the technical expertise, try what they are suggesting in post #3333.

Try deleting the cache first, unfortunately it is hit and miss, some are saying 1.0.14 is working fine, (it is on mine) and others say it is not. Might have to wait a few days and see how it goes.

From there you can proceed to Jailbreak as normal. (per this guide)

Connect it to your PC, and load iTunes, when iTunes loads it should take you straight to the Apple T.V 2 screen. Hold shift and then click on Restore. Then go to where you have the file unzipped and select it. That should start the Restoration process.

I just wanted to be sure it didn’t improve the actual streaming speed or something! Man, I can’t believe how incredible this is! Why is this not catching on at a faster rate? Any threads or posts you could recommend for setting up my Home Network so that I can stream my DVD’s from my PC? I’ve been searching the XMBC forums and Youtube, but haven’t come up with much yet.

I’m sure there is an easier way, but I had my Ps3 before that, and since I have an iPad 2 I haven’t learnt another way. If I do figure it out, I will let you know!

I opened the box and hooked it up to my tv to get a quick look at it before JB and saw that it read apple fw 4.3. I have tried SeasonPass and Sn0wbreeze and each time I get a error that it cannot restore. It always happens after it tries to verify with apple in Itunes. Is apple not signing the firmware anymore? I tried using iFaith to back up the Blobs but I keep getting a error Unknown IOS. Could it be the cable that I’m using?

If I just unzip the file then I just get a folder with the files in it and I cant choose the folder for a restore. I bought a new cable today and I still keep getting the same error. The apple tv”apple tv” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (3194). I have tried everything and I have JB plenty of Iphones with no problem but this Apple TV 2 is a big pain in the butt. It always gives me the error after it tries to verify with apple in Itunes. Again this apple tv was just opened brand new in the box so I have never backed up anything from it or updated it. Any other idea’s I can try? Thanks for all your help.

Apple is no longer ‘signing’ the version of AppleTV software you are attempting to restore. Update to the latest version of Seas0nPass to jailbreak and install the latest AppleTV version.

I pulled that off of FireCore’s website, it could be that my guide won’t work until the new jailbreak comes out. That firmware I linked you to might be too old, see if you can find a newer one on Google and retry the Jailbreak.

It seemed that the host file was not pointing to Apple and causing the first error and after fixing that I was getting the 21 error and seemed like I was having a problem staying in DFU mode so I actually plugged in the power cord while trying to JB and then unplugged it and that seemed to fix my issues. The JB apple tv is great and I’m so glad I bought one and will have to get another one for the other room now. Thank You for this wondeful website of knowledge and help.

Meaning that if you are connected to the same router under the same ISP (Internet Service Provider) Mega Upload will only allow one device to work at a time. So if a second person tries to start watching something, they will not be able while the other is already on.

Open iTunes, and hold shift down before hitting Restore. The. Select the created restore file. Hope that works for you, it was the issue I had!

I have Jailbroken 10 Apple T.V 2’s for friends and family but none in the last month. But based on other comments I have received I have to believe it is working and it could be this simple issue for you. If I hear anything else I will post it, please let me know how it goes and if you get it working, it would be good to know even if it really is a spacing issue.

I believe you have this issue due to Apple T.V 2 looking for updates, (and it knows that there are updates available) if you scroll up to the Blog and right below the last video immediately before the comments section, there is the information to turn off auto updating. After that the resets will stop!

The error coming up now is not your fault, there are issues that occur with IceFilms time to time that are from the source, and even those are not their fault sometimes. Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2011, 12:02 amI can’t stress the spacing of the line, echo “deb http: //atp.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list (which is not translated here properly, look above in the blog and listen to the guy in the video) Try a few things out and hopefully it will work for you. Don’t give up, just keep trying I promise you it will work. (even unplug the ATV2 one time just to make sure something else isn’t up) Starting at 4:11 of the video ‘SSH on Windows using putty’ (its 8:54 long) he actually tells you the spacing as he goes along. Hopefully that helps out! Please let me know how it goes!

I would recommend first restarting the Apple T.V 2 and then if that does not work, redoing the Jailbreak sequence. Unfortunately, this is the first time coming across that error. Even waiting a day or two and then trying to reinstall would help. Or you can SSH XBMC on to your APTV 2. Just search how to do that on Google and that will take over ride the issue altogether. Let me know how it goes and what you did to resolve the issue, at the same time I will keep searching for solutions.
Posted by Raj Randev | November 4, 2011, 6:37 pmWhen I reboot ATV2 after successful jailbreak, it gives me the iTunes USB symbol and I have to connect to iTunes. iTunes wont restore the file created by SeasOnPass.
I go back into SeasOnPass and redo the process (five times now) and still can’t reboot. Sure when I plug in the HDMI cable after SeasOnPass is done, I get ATV2 up and running, have to go through the setup again, etc. But then I SSH in, your echo statement doesn’t work. I Google’d nitoTV and got another echo statement to enter and went through that process. At least that echo statement worked. But no menu item for nitoTV. So I try to reboot ATV2–bam! iTunes logo and a USB cord symbol…in other words: NOT WORKING!
The echo command above is wrong somehow. When I try to do an apt-get install it says there is a malformed line 1…
I’m looking for another walk-through, or going back to the original Apple settings. Four hours of this and that’s enough for me.

Posted by Jacoby | November 5, 2011, 6:34 pmThis thing is not easy, there are so many variables that need to be addressed, if you do a search on Google, many times it is hit or miss and many people have many issues, you have to be vigilant and diligent in your process. Sometimes just doing it with a day’s rest makes all the difference in the world.
As for the spacing issue for the echo command, if you go to the video at 4:11 the gentleman xtechs states where the spaces are suppose to be.
Also, those videos do not belong to me, xtechs is highly regarded in the community with his video’s, and the other video by Randyvdmeer is a straight forward and excellent video, I won’t accept any criticism on their video’s as many people have viewed them and they are accepted as great resources. My video’s I will accept as inferior, but they serve their function and get the job done. Really can’t be more straight forward then that.
Sorry it isn’t working for you, as you can see from the comments above it works perfectly sometimes for some people and for others it takes some effort and eventually does work, but you are the first that it won’t work for, and somehow, life does go on. I will offer this, if you can grab another unit and try again, or wait for the next guide that will cover the next upgrade.

Anyhow, my problem is getting my ATV2 to see the Icefilm addon. I have used Winscp to get it into the media folder. On WinSCP – it’s there in the right location. However, when I actually try to find it through the menus on XBMC through settings and then addons – the file doesn’t exit. I even tried putting it in the “root” folder to see if it would just pop up, but no luck. Next, I tried unplugging for a power cycle (for 20 minutes). Once it booted up, I tried locating the Addon again, and it wasn’t there. I know I am putting it in the right place of which is var/mobile/Media. (although i never see the folder labeled Private – I’m assuming that’s the main folder). I don’t know what to do next. 😦

I ended up just putting it in var/mobile and it copied over as a zip file this time and xbmc was able to install it. I did have to power cycle (5 mins) before I could actually see the video addons in the anarchintosh folder.

(SSH on Windows Using Putty for Apple Tv 2, How to) Normally when that issue occurs it is due to this reason.
However, having said that, it also could be that the version is no longer supported due to the new release. Please try again while listening to the spacing and see if that works, if it doesn’t, I will research further and see if there is something else up!

I have been playing around with this issue I had. I fixed it by re-installing atv flash black. Then I went in manage extras and installed xbmc and nitotv. all good now.
but I would like to install ICEfilms. can you help me out. I went in XBMC in videos add ons. I can’t find anything.
I also tried using winSCP. I put the zip file in the right place, but I can not find it on my appletv.
I also would like to install other ones like fastpass.tv

Like unplug it and wait 5 min and plug it back in. Also, if that doesn’t work, use the reverse instructions to remove what you did and see if that makes a difference.
Also, wasn’t your Apple T.V 2 resetting itself before today? It should have been giving you that issue prior to this… Unless you just Jail broke it recently…
Let me know how it goes, I would feel horrible if you can’t get it up and running due to my instructions!

My apple TV was reseting, but what’s happening now is after the 45 second loading time, the screen goes away and it doesn’t go into the video. It also stopped my netflix from working. I’m restoring it to factory.

Please keep me updated on after you reinstall and go through the process again. I’ve used those exact instructions and I’ve even gotten total newbs (Family) to go through them and watched it work many times. Problem is since the new update, I have noticed a greater frequency of errors being reported. There is a tethered update available and XBMC only works on the nightly build. I will wait for the untethered version before updating and making a new guide.
Please keep me informed on your progress and let me know if you go through all the steps again, including the August 4th update and if it happens again.

If you are technically inclined and something does happen, are you able to fix the issue. If you think you can handle it, and the fact that it sucks that your Apple T.V 2 keeps resetting then please try it.
If not, then just wait, until we can get some independent verification that it was a random error that occurred and not something directly related to the SSH instructions.

For the purpose of full disclosure, I had to SSH XBMC on to the Apple T.V because it wasn’t getting it, however, the rest I was able to do as per the instructions provided. Of course because I have done about 20+ installs on the Apple T.V 2 its really fast for me, but I took the time to go through everything, including SSHing the update instructions (from the August 4th, 2011 update) So everything went flawless and smooth. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the process!
There are a lot of variables that can come up, but I didn’t come up with any of them this time around. (except plugging in the power cord for DFU mode)
So I have 2 Apple T.V 2’s now! I hope this helps!

For some reason, I do see a blip every morning on the site stats for my other blog, (Is IceFilms down or UP) but by the time I wake up and try it, all is operational. I am beginning to think there are random outages, but not across the board. But that’s just a guess. Hopefully its back up and running for you now.

If you want it back to normal, get a usb to micro usb cord online for a few bux and simply restore it through itunes. That should fix your problems.

Some people have feelings of anxiety with they tread into uncharted territory and there are a lot of things that feel like they are going wrong. I do have some comments about your guide above, though. When you start the section on installing NitoTV, your audible video instructions do not match what you are typing into Putty. When you get to the “echo” line of code that needs to be entered, you clearly say (I have removed unnecessary audio, added spaced between the words you say and replaced actual spaces i the typing sequence with the word space):
“echo space colon deb space http colon // atp dot awkwardtv dot org space dot / hyphen > space / etc / apt / sources dot list dot d / awkwardtv dot list”
What you should have said is:
“echo space quote deb space http colon // atp dot awkwardtv dot org space dot / quote > space / etc / apt / sources dot list dot d / awkwardtv dot list”
People should also be cautioned about trying to copy and paste the line of code into Putty you have above, as doing so will replace the quotes with dots.
After entering the above line of code and the following “apt-get update”, if you don’t immediately start seeing the files for the update being retrieved, you will need to unplug the power from your AppleTV and then plug it back in and start over with the NitoTV sequence. It took me about two hours to figure this out.

My default view of the XBMC add-on menu goes horizontally across the screen, and is not on the left side as you show in your video. For the life of me, I could not find the Add-Ons selection under System on the XBMC menu. The System selection showed Settings, File Manager, Profiles and System Info as sub-categories. For those like me who had trouble finding the Add-Ons section, you need to click on the Settings menu item, and not the sub-categories. This will present you with the vertical menu on the left side from which you can select Add-Ons. From there you can install from the zip file.

Hahaha, yeah, the person in the video is xtechs, he makes some awesome videos and he’s up fast with new releases and knows much more then I do, that’s actually not me. I have that video to help with the spacing as the fonts make it seem like the spaces on certain places are not there. That’s to assist with that and to see actually what was going on. I don’t have the video editing or video equipment to make a video like that just yet. But I will take your line and add it to the blog under the line as I was planning to do that myself, so thank you for the information!
Using the video and my line everything needed is there, but I can easily see how that can confuse people, so I take responsibility on that, I’ve long suspected it to be causing issues but thought between the two it was fine, (but its not).

My friend told me that a few of his customers that he’s been doing this for have had problems with the apple tv restarting and that he had to install Nito TV and then XBMC. I haven’t had any problems yet, but is it possible that there is just a delay and my Apple TVs will start having this same problem

I was able to without any problems. So I know its hit and miss but you have to really work on it. Also, things change day to day, if something doesn’t work today, try again tomorrow and the next day until it does or until it is discovered that no one can do it any more.

I am running the latest 4.3 appletv software.
I saw the 08/04 update above and typed in those commands in putty, then unplugged appletv and restarted, but still get the same script errors. Any thoughts?

A while back I used to encounter the metadata container error often, I know they have fixed that issue, depending on what time you tried last night there was an IceFilms update / error where the website wasn’t hosting live files for a bit.
Maybe by now you’ve tried again and it works, since you did write that 12 hours ago. Let me know if the issue persists and I’ll see what I can come up with. Just keep trying though, eventually it will work as long as the meta container exists, there is another way, but try the normal way first. (I believe you should be up and running by now)

If you look at Dan’s comment from last night he was having the same issue, and I was having the issue a bit as well. I just tried to load two programs, one worked and the second failed, then tried again and it worked. There is something going on as both took longer then normal to load. Not down across the board, but I think there are currently issues.
Only way to correct is wait for them to fix it, I don’t mess with daily builds because so many things can go wrong. Sorry I can’t help out more then that!

My computer was automatically unzipping the files so I figured out that if you “right click” (the mac’s right click) and “save as” it works just fine.

Wow, you’ve got some patience there! I think Apple T.V took mercy on you and decided to let it work! About 10 minutes or so in (depending on your internet connection) you could have just unplugged it, plugged it back in and it would have been working. (Give or take an additional 10 minutes) But the point is, it is working and you figured it out yourself!

It should be like this,
echo “deb http: //atp.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
apt-get update
apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV
killall Lowtide
The spacing of the line echo “deb http, etc” should be perfect or it won’t work. A lot of people get stuck here, but keep trying the spacing. If it takes way too long then there could be another issue, I would recommend a PC restart or waiting a day to try it again. Please keep me posted on your progress!

You have to make sure your Apple T.V 2 is also connected to your Router (don’t matter if wired or wireless) and then connect with putty. Its not common to get this error so you are going to have to see what it is that might be a bit off. Make sure the selection is SSH the Port 22 and the I.P exactly as yours is in ABOUT.
IF that doesn’t work uninstall Putty and reinstall it and reset your PC. Remember this will only work if your Apple T.V 2 is Jail broken.
Let me know how it goes and what your solution was!

I’m not sure if you are using PC or MAC, but try using WinSCP for PC, there is a picture in the guide I created that shows where you are to place it and how to extract it. The video IceFilms missing Part 1 and 2 will show you how to find it and how to extract it from your Apple T.V 2.
I’ve never used Cyberduck before, but with WinSCP I have to back out of a lot of folders and go to the root directory and find my folder and then place it there, it could be the same issue with Cyberduck. Just play around with the folders, if you can transfer the file over, you can find it on the Apple T.V 2 as you can just look through all the folders. It seems complex but trust me its not.
I just Jail Broke another Apple T.V 2 last night from start to finish and it was a breeze, so I assure you, unless something happened between now and then, all is well. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

1st My aptv2 freezes up quite a bit and to get out i need to unplug the aptv power cord
2nd There is no way to FFW or RW the movies u r watching?..I also downloaded navi-x and looks like you can but just 30 sec at a time (kind of irritating…and talking about irritating is even more irritating the fact that the title are not in alphabetic order or that you cant resume the movie you where watching…there is something about that that you can fix on the settings??)…for what i saw no but hope there is
3rd icefilm or navi-x they use megavide or vedeobb well do you need to have an account and pay to be able to watch more then the 60 or 90 minutes they allow you to watch?..and also is tvshack (now is tv search) available for aptv2?

Glad it worked out for you, here’s my best attempt to answer your questions,
1. This could be due to a lot of reasons, if it is doing so in a T.V show or Movie, you need to use the SSH commands to stop the updates from happening. (Last part of my blog, after its says update from August 4th)
2. They are working on the Fast Fwding and Rewinding, FFW works a little bit if you hold the centre button, I think you can get up to 32x but its not that fast, to forward 1 hour into a film takes about 10-12 minutes. I’ve never been able to RW yet.
3. You don’t need a Mega Video or any other account, the 45 seconds you wait in the beginning are due to the free, I have watched over 15 hours in one day before and never had a single issue!

1. I have a question. I’ve used seasOnPass to jailbreak my ATV2. I have coworkers and friends who want me to jailbreak their device and set it up for them. Since when you jailbreak it, you need to connect it to iTunes, is it like other apple devices where I need their iTunes account to finalize, or can I use my own iTunes (or any iTunes) account to finalize the jailbreak process? If the latter, it would make it very easy for me to do this as opposed to them bringing their laptops to work, etc…
2. Another question with regards to the version of ATV2. My own version was 4.3 and the untethered version from seas0nPass was a simple install. However, what if my friends have an older version – can I update to 4.3 or must I update to the latest?

1. Nothing to worry about, take it home, Jailbreak it, install all the repo’s you want, and take it back, no need to worry. iTunes and Apple T.V really have nothing to do with each other in the way an iPod or iPhone have…
2. As long as its not a version higher I think there is nothing to worry about (and even then), even ones that are new out of the box I just do the steps involved and it works. Its only going to matter to those who want the new iOS features that it will make a difference. (Not available untethered yet). So if someone has iOS 5 on it, that’s the only time you would have to roll back the firmware. Try it, if the Jailbreak fails then you know you have to bring it back to an older firmware.

I am getting all the way through the process (after numerous hours of back tracking on my mistakes) almost at the end but now get larger itunes logo with usb cable on my tv. I think it hasbeen suggested that I didn’t tether boot after jailbreak, and but positive I did and I had the script for nitotv run fine. I any ideas or suggestions??

You must keep it on. Check your version and if worst comes to worst you can start over after restoring your Apple T.V 2 and if that doesn’t work just buy a new one! =)

I also installed the latest nightly build of XBMC because the old stable version won’t work with 4.4. Everything is good to go except I can’t install the ICEFILMS addon. I used cyberduck to send over the zip file to the apple tv and put it in the media folder, however when i go to install it on xbmc the zip file isn’t anywhere to be found including where I put it. What do you think I’m doing wrong?

What we discovered a while ago is that on a MAC the ZIP file is unzipped automatically and when you transfer it to the Apple T.V 2 it won’t recognize the ZIP.ini file (or something like that) If you are using a PC I would recommend using WinSCP and follow the blog instructions.
Sometimes it can be as easily as clicking an extra folder or two in Apple T.V because many of the subdirectories and root directories are named similarly. (you can navigate the sub directories on the Apple T.V)

For AJ addons for South Asian programming, TV on Desi Zone has appeared but Desi T.V is gone. Problem is I haven’t been able to get Desi T.V to work yet…
Try to remove and add the program back and see if that makes a difference… Keep me informed!

I’m sure we are flashing the firmware on the device at some point, so even swapping hard drive’s would not make this work. But I will begrudgingly admit that this is above my knowledge level. I would suggest posting this to the XBMC community and seeing what they have to say. I will take a look when I get a chance to see if this has been covered before and provide you with a better answer!

Posted by Dan B. | December 18, 2011, 4:37 pmYeah, I wouldn’t even know where to begin on that, I actually think that during the process of Jailbreaking when you first create the ISPW and are restoring through iTunes that the Apple T.V 2 connects to Apple’s server for signature verification and as long as they ‘sign’ for it (a process I am not totally familiar with) the Jailbreak can then process successfully. This may have nothing to do with it, or it may have everything to do with it. Like I said, this is a bit above my pay grade..
I would recommend takling to the XBMC community on their forums and seeing what you can come up with, if its possible someone would have made it already.

Posted by Sam | December 19, 2011, 9:49 pmI believe as long as you use the untethered Jailbreak provided by Firecore it will downgrade the Apple T.V 2 to the version required. If that doesn’t work, go up a bit in the comments and you will find a version that will work and you can just restore the Apple T.V 2 to that version and then begin the Jailbreak process.

The other question is I’m trying find smart installer on nitotv. I have purchased the atv flash black and installed that with no problem?

I’m not sure if this applies, but way back up in the comments, a user reported that Mac’s automatically unzip files for you, make sure the file stays zipped when transferring over to Apple T.V 2 or the Apple T.V 2 will not recognize the file. (won’t show up)

I go to add-ons, and enable it… and when I go to the video add-on folder to install it, the Anarchintosh folder is empty..
I have already tried your 5-10 min unplug trick – Install file doesn’t show up after that either 😦

Posted by Nico | December 31, 2011, 3:25 am2 things to check here, first make sure your internet connection didn’t drop, as the XBMC one shouldn’t be empty. Second, if the first fails, is to uninstall the repo and reinstall it, but make sure you use the one in my link above from the blog. I’m still getting thank you emails from people saying how it worked for them, so I know its not a widespread issue and its something localized to just you.
IF those two things fail, connect your Apple T.V 2 back to iTunes and factory restore it, and start the whole process over, sometimes, something like that is required. Don’t know why, but the point is, it may just be what you need to get it to work!

Not sure if it’s normal, but if I start steaming a movie and quit it shortly after I can’t start steaming a new movie – It simply just start the 10 sec mega upload count down, and after that’s done nothing happens.
Do I just need to wait a bit before starting to steam a new movie?

NITO is just a client software that lets you get other stuff. LOL To get Indian Movies go to the link and download AJ’s repo and SSH it over to the Apple T.V 2. Insteall Filmi By Nature and Desi TV and you will be the loved child for a long time in your household. Download SportsDevil for live streaming Sports. But be warned, after the Indian Channels, you won’t get much access to your Apple T.V again…

Going up to my guide where it says, you are now 3/4 of the way done, follow those steps to transfer over AJ’s repo and use the same steps to install it as if you were installing IceFilms but only you will be getting Indian T.V Show’s and Movie’s instead.
SSH just means accessing a remote computer which is essentially what you are doing when transferring files from your PC to your Apple T.V 2. Let me know if you need some more assistance, I’m more then happy to help!

(somewhere near the repository hit the left side button and a mini menu pulls out and you can check in on there) Also try to unplug your Apple T.V 2 for a few minutes, sometimes that makes a big difference too.

You told to make sure mac doesn’t unzip the file while downloading which is exactly what my computer does. How can I make sure the computer doesn’t unzip while downloading? I’m working on a macbook pro (Lion). Also, I downloaded the 4.4.4 and I’ve read it wasn’t very reliable yet. Should I switch for a previous version? Which version is best to use?

I have been trying to get icefilms to work now from about 5 hours 😦
I JB my apple tv no problem using seas0npass no problem
then i added xbmc no problem
then i came too adding icefilms all looked good until i clicked on videos video add-ons then icefilms it asked me to install a big file about 235mb if i remember correctly well it got to the end 100% and then locked up i waited a good 30mins nothing happened so i unpluged. Now when i click video add-ons then icefilms it loads the main menu tv shows movies music stand up comedy ect. but when i click on tv shows for example and then popular or a-z highly rated anything theres no shows there same with movies theres nothing there. I persume i need to download the big file again but it no longer promps me to do so even if i remove icefilms can u help? I know i have gone wrong somewhere.

SSh’d into my Apple TV via Cyberduck. Put the file you said in the right spot. As per these directions.
You have to place the file you downloaded called repository.googlecode.anarchintosh-projects from your P.C (keep it zipped, some MAC’s automatically unzip the folder, make sure it stays zipped) into a folder called the “ /private/var/mobile/Media” on your ATV2.
Go to XMBC on ATV and go find the file. No problem. I see it and it is still zipped. When I click on it, it doesn’t give me the option to click “ok” to unzip it.
It doesn’t give me the option to click “OK” Help ?

Maybe try throwin it in private/var/mobile, then check in xbmc–>system–>add ons–>zip–> and it should be in the home folder..

After the restart it should be a lot better. But if everything is working it could be just today and tomorrow everything will be great. Also your internet connection should be about 10mb/s minimum, anything slower and I don’t know how stable the stream will be.

As for the fast forward, hold down the silver center button, brings up the FF menu, the FF is very bad currently and that is after multiple updates, rewind does not work and to Forward an hour into a movie could take up to 10-15 minutes. SO make sure if you start watching something to finish it. LOL.
Sorry I can’t offer better then that, the guys who code are doing a fantastic job but its hard to FFW and RWD internet streams apparently.

At home I have entertainment systems that attach to YouTube. I must fix this… But I think the answer you are looking for may lie in the cloud…But I will have to research that and get back to you, just don’t hold your breath, its on a list of things to do that is very long… =)

I have jailbroken and restored it to factory settings 3 times now… I get all the way done with seasons pass, installing xbmc, nito tv…. then when I sign into WINSCP with the ip address root and alipne, i get a security breach message saying the server’s host key does not match the one cached in the registry…. and that perhaps the IP from my APTV2 is false and actually someone else’s…. i don’t know what else to do… PUTTY gives me the same message
The very first time I tried it… i was able to send the file over, however I believe it was unzipped when I sent it to my media file in XBMC…… and as a result, I could not unzipit…. Can you help me??

this zip file is presently on my desktop(unzipped)… and when I open WINSCP, and enter the IP, root and alpine, the apple TV side already shows the file (repository.googlecode..etc) under media, when on the TV, I can not see it… frustrating.. last thing I want to do is pay this guy 100.00 to do this when I am 9/10s of the way there….
Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2012, 8:38 pmIF you are using PC then it is WinSCP that you use to get it over, if you are using MAC you can use CyberDuck or some other MAC utility that does this. The file cannot be unzipped, if it downloads like that, then you are most likely on a MAC. At the top of my tutorial right under the “Jailbreaking” heading I give you instructions on how to stop that on a MAC. Also, do not rezip the file, make sure you download it again and then transfer it over.
Once again, if the file is unzipped, it will not work, you must transfer it over zipped. This is the solution.

The two are talking to each other, the reason I told you to check out that video is because it shows you what is says and what you need to do. Just Click okay when it gives you that message about it not being in the cache / registry.
Try again and let me know what happens. I am here waiting for your response!

then went to the desktop folder on the left hand side(PC side) and copied it over the the right side(APTV side)… then I went into xbmc… and can not see the zip file from system to settings to addons to install from zip file to looking in the home folder to looking in the media folder…… and it`s not there….. I`m fed up…

Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2012, 10:21 pmOn the right side of the screen, in WinSCP click the up arrow to get back to the first directory and then look for each one and move forward. So you will click on that right upperhand arrow until it stops, then look for ‘private’, click on that, then look for ‘var’ and click on that then ‘mobile’ and finally ‘media’ and then place the file in there.
After you are sure you put it in to private/var/mobile/Media on the right side. Then go to your APple T.V which is going to be on your T.V and connected to the internet already and go to System, then Add Ons, Install from Zip, click on the Home and then the Media tab. Should be in there. You can’t just move the file over, you have to move it to a place you know you can find it after.
Let me know if you get that done!

Posted by Bing | January 10, 2012, 11:56 pmNo, you don’t need it at all. All the premium account did was remove the 45 second delay before a show started but they have removed that as of the last update. So there is zero need, none whatsoever to get a premium account.
If you did get it, there was a line you would put your username and password in and it would get rid of that.
But once again, no need whatsoever for a premium account right now and for the foreseeable future!

I jailbroke my ATV2 successfully about 2 months ago. I am running 4.3 and have a question about upgrading to 4.4.4. My ATV is telling me that my software is up-to-date (from the settings menu) and in maintenance I see that the update software setting is disabled and I can’t change this setting. It is grayed out.
My question is, how do I update to ATV’s latest software? Do I need to go through the jailbreaking process again?

LOL, just kidding (well actually just sorta), to upgrade to 4.4.4, you have to connect your Apple T.V 2 to iTunes and click on restore. You will be upgraded to non jailbroken 4.4.4 and then follow the guide above (its like doing it all over from scratch).

From what I understand, Plex will allow you to run your own 720P media but 1080P is still not supported.
Posted by Raj Randev | January 15, 2012, 2:26 pmThe 720P content that is on IceFilms is a certain size and bitrate. The Apple T.V 2 only plays a maximum bitrate and certain file type of this format. The rest it cannot handle so it stutters in the video playback (sometimes audio too)
So in layman’s terms, its a hardware limitation that the Apple T.V 2 has and until a third version comes out that fixes this, it may be near impossible to play a 720P file from IceFilms. (Plex notwithstanding) (Explained in my follow up answer)

e: type ‘deb’ is not known on line 1 in source list / etc / apt / sources.list.d / awkwardtv.list
i dont know what i did wrong the first time and certainly dont know how to fix this. any ideas?

I had to search this for where you posted it, lol, hopefully you see it, I’ll repost it at the bottom to be sure.
First ensure that the spacing is correct, if the spaces in between are wrong then it will give you that message. If you think you are doing this right, type ‘killall Lowtide’ to cause the operation to restart and then start from the beginning. If that fails, restart the jailbreak process from the beginning. Its not like it damages the Apple T.V 2 or anything. In the end you only lose 10 minutes of your time by doing it again.
Let me know if there is anything else you need and let me know the outcome!

I have a problem. I do not have the repository .google.on my /private/var/root side and I also noticed that the softonic down loader was partial down load. I got the xbmc on the apple tv2 showing up on the tv and just it also doesn’t show the repository/goole file in the setting side of xbmc side . i tried the unplug the aptv and add unzipped foldes but it still doesnt’t show on the apple tv xbmx settings side.Did i miss a step?

Posted by big Mike | January 16, 2012, 10:12 pmFrom what I can gather, you haven’t put it in the right folder, the folder it should belong to is ‘/private/var/mobile/Media’ then when you go into XBMC you must go to the setup/video add ons and install it from there. If you have done this and cannot see the ZIP file and you are on a MAC, make sure to turn off automatic unzipping feature on your MAC. (in the blog above, just search for it right under the ‘Jailbreak’ heading) If you are a PC then the SSH instructions are straight forward.
Just follow the blog from the step you are at and ensure to follow the directions implicitly and I trust you will be up and running successfully.
Let me know if there is anything else you need, I am on for an hour or so more and will be back tomorrow by 11am.

Not having and luck .When in the apple tv in mt pc I copy and past the the /private/var/ and i update on the apple tv dox nothing is there . It wont show that on the menu or anywhere .
I tried the steps again and noticed that when I download the putty and go throught the steps after i entre the apt-get updae it does down load but noticed that some of the last bit of files where not new and it used some old files. not sure if that was right and on another note it would not let me exit the last part killall Lowtide said file not found. tried the other video like in that also and that didnt work. What should I do now?

I see you have a communication barrier and I suspect that English is not your first language (I apologize if this is incorrect) I would recommend you ask a friend to help you out and to follow the guide as this will be extremely difficult to do without being able to diagnose it myself. Sorry that’s all I can offer at this point. Keep asking any questions you have, I’ll do my best to assist you!

I installed season pass 4.4.4, Used putty to install nito, installed xbmc and then installed ice films as you described. I have followed all the videos and everything seems to work once. When I watch a movie and then go to watch another nothing happens .It is the same when I watch any TV show. I can watch one episode but when I go to the next episode the same thing happens, it just goes back to the source page and will not load. I have reinstalled everything 5 times and the result is always the same. If I uninstall XBMC and reinstall or unplug my apple tv then I can watch one movie and then the same thing happens. Any suggestions.

2 temporary solutions I found were to
A) Wait about 20 minutes and it will fix itself..
B) Go in through FileZilla (Mac) or WinSCP (Win) and delete the xbmc cache files. I forget where they are off the top of my head, but you can find them through google search. This will fix the issue immediately.
Posted by cscuilla@craisondigital.com | January 17, 2012, 2:09 pmYes, I am aware of this issue, right now all I have to offer is to pull the plug on the Apple T.V 2 and by the time you come back in its fixed. It doesn’t happen if we watch the program all the way through, but if we start and then stop it this issue would occur. A solution that was suggested was changing the router settings (on one’s own router) as the router is preventing some sort of anti-flooding, I don’t think that is a valid solution at this point however.
At the end of my blog I have added a Known Issues section and this is still a pending issue we hope to see a resolution to in the next update. I will keep everyone posted!

I am have a error 1604 while at step five when I am trying to upload from the zipped file from Itunes
(AT Step 5 when iTunes opens you have to hold the Shift key and then click restore, then click on the file that was created by SeasonPass, it should be called something like this, “AppleTV2,1_SP_restore” or something similar.
It uploads to the apple tv . I looked at the error on another page and it said to change usb ports and I tried that with no luck.
I did redo al my steps again due to I could not get my xbmc to work so this error occured after I set my apple tv 2 to factory setting and tried to jb it again. Did I reset this wrong.

I erased and re installed putty twice, same thing happened. It is the correct ip address.I unpluggef the apple tv again and input the english and my wifi address. But not sure what is happening now. Posted by Mike | January 18, 2012, 12:27 pmYou must load the ZIpped file over to Apple T.V 2. Did you unzip the file or are you on a MAC? If you unzipped it yourself, use the original file and transfer that over.
If it is not connecting, turn off everything (including your PC) and turn it back on, after this power cycle try it again, go to the Apple T.V ABOUT and make sure you copy the I.P not the DNS, not the other option by error. Its easy to make.
Let me know when you get that far, and if you are on a MAC, the instruction to download a Zipped file is in the blog.

But if you go check the I.P address (make sure your APple T.V 2 is on and connected to your T.V) It just could be when you re jailbroke your Apple T.V 2 the I.P changed and you are using the old one you wrote down on a piece of paper!

I noticed this on my dowloads ..Sonic Downlowder_ for_ putty(1).exe.3y…todays date……partial download 313 kB
Looks like the whole file isnt there and I keep trying but the same partial down loads happends again.Is this normal ?Could it be my McAfee ?
Another thing that is diffent in the video, When I am about to hit the shift button for the Itunes it wont go to my itune files like it did before It just installs the Itunes update and thats it. I did notice in another video it says it updates itself but but when I follow the blog it says to hit the sift key as you hit the restore key.

Even better, if you have a webcam, we can skype and I can give you detailed instructions as you go along, but I’m worried about your PC and what settings and limitations are there because you are unable to download Putty properly. But I’m willing to give it a try!

I tried again after a break and I got it to where it would add xbmc and I went to look at the add ons and to the zip files and there was nothing there again like before. I left the apple tv 2 unplugged for a half hour and tried again. Nothing .
I really am greatful for your help . I work all over GTA (mostly Oakville Miss.and Torornto)and if would be possible I would send you me email .not sure if you are able to retreave it from your end.

On your blog where you ask to down load winScp,the second picture down it shows the file from the pc and the file from the atv.
Mine is the same but on you picture the atv side shows the folder as a mobile folder and mine shows as a root folder with

Is this what could be causing me the problems? Is it in the wrong file? Is the bash history not allowing me to upload the repository?

Posted by Mike | January 19, 2012, 11:14 amYes this would be a problem, make sure that you go all the way out in the folder portion by keep clicking on the folder with the arrow pointing to the left and up. Click it until it won’t go any more and then click on the folders in order until you get to the proper path.
Without it in the proper folder you will not find the zip.

So you have to decide if $30 is worth it. But from the reviews, a lot of people really like it. Fortunately for me, I don’t use the Apple T.V 2 for surfing. But if you have an iPad 2, you could achieve the same result through mirroring.

This may actually be huge blow to IceFilms and its future. Based on this news, I suspect that the future of IceFilms is in Jeopardy unless something else is in the works. For now, I will not be offering any support for Jailbreaking Apple T.V 2 as it will no longer work.

I will most likely modify this blog and remove the IceFilms portion all together. I can get to XBMC, IceFilms, Movies, see all the menu choices for the movies, but once I select a movie, I get Loading Directory and an empty .. screen and no options to select anything. Thinking that my ATV2 had an error i rebooted and re jailbroke it. Now when i try to install icefilms version 1.0.22 it just keeps saying script error. Will this be temporary and a new fix be uploaded due to the blockage of megaupload? Or is there any way around this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Posted by ryoz123 | January 20, 2012, 2:22 amI’m assuming that you have entered the I.P address exactly as shown on the Apple T.V 2 settings and have ensured that your Apple T.V 2 is connected to your local network. If both those things are not the cause, I would recommend trying to power cycle your PC and your Apple T.V 2 as this sometimes clears the issue. If that does not work, redownload and reinstall WInSCP,

I have an issue with the XBMC. When I go into XBMC, after 10 seconds it throws me back into appletv menu. I also noticed, before this issue. There was an available update for moviesdb. I took the update. I THINK that ever since I took this update, I am getting this problem with XBMC.

No more nightly builds! Eden beta 1 is here! If you installed for the first time today using the above instructions then you already have Beta 1. If not, either update through NitoTV or issue the following commands to update your Cydia copy:
Open up your terminal/ssh application and enter the following command to log in to your ATV2:
ssh root@YOUR.ATV2.IP.ADDRESS
You will be asked for a password: default password is alpine
Continue to enter the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
You should now have Eden Beta 2 for ATV2.

Notice the space on both sides of the > above.
echo space quote deb space http colon // atp dot awkwardtv dot org space dot / quote > space / etc / apt / sources dot list dot d / awkwardtv dot list
The way you have it written is quote > space. Shouldn’t it be, quote space > space ?. Which way is it suppose to be ?. Two spaces on either side of the > or just one space after the > ?. I did mine like you have it written out and seemed to work. Wondering if really matters. I assume it would.

The last 5 or times I used the Jail break myself I went with what I had and it worked, next time I will put a space on both sides and see if that works as well.

Updating to XMBC Eden Beta 2 reportedly fixed that issue. If that is in fact the issue you are having, (when XBMC loads it will say what version of XMBC you have) at the very bottom of the blog (where I finish writing the article) I’ve posted how to upgrade to Eden 2.
I’m not sure if this is the issue, let me know if this resolves it and I’ll research any more solutions.

Therefore, I do not have the installation programs on my computer to enter code or update my cydia. Also, the guy who installed everything for me told me that I didn’t really need Nito TV so he didn’t put it on there. Sorry that I am dumb witted with this stuff…

However, I have tried about three times to install Eden Beta 2, but yet my xmbc option in Nito TV still says that I have the first version. Then, I tried to input the commands trough putty. I can enter the ssh root@YOUR.ATV2.IP.ADDRESS part no problem, but every time I enter alpine as my password it says access denied. Can you help me from here please?

However, it still says that I am running version 11.0-0-b1 (which I believe is Eden Beta 1). In Nito TV when I click on XMBC it says that the new update is 11.0-0-b2, but when I click install it again says that I am up to date and it tells me that 0 updates have been completed. Should I just be patient? or is there something that I am missing?

It’s coming from the XBMC forums so try to follow along, if you can follow those instructions your problem should go away. Use WINSCP to get into the folders he describes below. The folder directories will look like this, /private/var/stash/Applications/XBMC.frappliance/XBMCData/XBMCHome/addons. And then delete what he says…
‘ok ive managed to get it working,its to do with the metadata the xbmc plugins you need to ftp into your box,and goto the folder stash,the applications,XBMC.frappliance,XBMCData,XBMCHome,ad dons,then delete folder that has movie db metadata in it,also delete xbmc metadata file to this will get xbmc to stop crashing but it will come up with plugins broken just press yes to all of them,it should work after that,this is a work in progress but at least it will be able to use xbmc,or the other way is uplug your router boot xbmc then plug your router back in,but if you shut xbmc and boot up it again with interent still connected it will crash again’

It is still crashing. I also tried booting XBMC while my router was unplugged, but again it just keeps rebooting the apple tv. I don’t know what is meant by having to ‘ftp’ into the box, but I did follow the rest of the instructions. Should I just rejailbreak the entire system?

Unfortunately, I won’t be around until Sunday, so if you run into issues, just know I will be back by then to help you out! But as far as I knew this issue was resolved, try searching Google and the XBMC forums to see if there is something to try before going through that whole process again!

Just grab the Repository that you need put it in the correct folder and then find it on the APTV2 and install it from there. WinSCP and the repo’s are in the blog above as well! (Super guide oh yeah!) LOL!

The Apple T.V 2 is fried. You are not waiting long enough from initial boot up. Try to mess with those things a bit and see how it goes. Try it at a different T.V or even a friend’s house if the issue persists.

To check your IceFilms version just go to the screen where it says IceFilms and don’t click on it, will show you the version. Also, what other programs are not working for you?

I try to my best to help everyone and let’s see if we can figure out what’s wrong with yours. Right now, the repo’s are all messed up because of MegaUpload going down forever most likely. All the previous hosted files have to go somewhere and during this transition its going to be hell.
From what I can see you are totally updated and you do have auto updating on. (otherwise you wouldn’t be at 1.0.24)
For now un-install the program and reinstall it from the System/add-ons page and see if that helps. But I think waiting this out for a day or two might be the better solution. However, I will keep checking to make sure there isn’t something else that is wrong right now.

apt-get purge org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
That should take you to the Eden 2 beta.

when i put in dfu mode and go into itunes i try to shift click but it just goes too fast and i cant
click on restore or the file is this normal?
then it keeps getting hung up on itunes is restoring files.
wont move waited hours . Tried several times any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by andy | February 5, 2012, 1:12 pmNo stick with FireCore’s website and download their newest version, you don’t need the older one. And go with the newest version of everything! Just follow the blog as is. For iTunes issues, restart your PC and make sure your iTunes is up to date. Usually those are the errors that accompany iTunes and how they are resolved. During the shift + Restore, Firecore runs a script that does it for you, don’t try to click on anything after it prompts you to do it for you.

Can you tell me in simple steps how do i install icefilms and navi x? i mean ok i download the zip file to my mac. then what???? how do i “transfer?” it to the appletv?

Posted by Alex | February 6, 2012, 2:07 pmNo, not dumb at all. With Mac you have to ensure that auto unzipping of zip files is disabled. From there you open a program that is native to MAC for SSH’ing files over. I think its called CyberDuck. (I think Terminal works too) You place that file over into a specific directory (found in the blog above) while the Apple T.V is connected to the internet and your T.V and then go to the Apple T.V and install the Repo!

To be honest I never heard of 1channel because I was in the midst of my brother’s engagement party and my birthday and a whole bunch of other celebrations since the last week of January. I took a look into 1Channel and tried to install the repo only to get the dependencies not met error. Tried the workaround suggested by unzipping it and placing it into the folder directly and tried it, but now just realized I forgot to restart my Apple T.V 2 first.
There are some issues with it but you can find out everything from the main source here,

Posted by eli | February 17, 2012, 12:24 amAre you on a MAC? A problem from before is that people didn’t realize that their Mac’s were unzipping their files and modifying them automatically. You must turn this feature off (instructions in blog above). If you are on a PC ensure that the REPO you downloaded is from a trusted source and is the newest.
Sometimes its just IceFilms that’s down. Just wait a few hours and try again after a hard boot and it solves the issue.

Sometimes when you reset your modem/router or add other devices while you may have been doing something else, the I.P may have changed. (my first thought) Just go and see if it’s the same I.P first. Let me know if that solves it. Otherwise I will have to look up a second solution.
It could be this or a corrupt program (re-downloaded and re-installed) or just reboot your computer. Sometimes that just fixes it. Oh and for the love of god, make sure your Apple T.V 2 is connected to the internet! You’d be surprised how many times its just that…

Posted by leah | February 21, 2012, 3:56 pmI’m just trying to think what might have caused this. There are tons of updates that have come out and on top of that MegaUpload the main source of where all the files were kept was taken down causing a huge loss of shows available to watch.
Then I think it could be your internet connection. You will have to tell me a bit more about your situation before I can recommend a fix. What version are you running? Did you go from wire to wireless? Are you trying to run 720P or HD content? Etc..

No, i havent tried to watch 720 or hd. Is there certain update i am suppose to do? The streaming is very very slow. It was fine at first but now not worth watching. im looking at the icefilms website and it says the mega uploader is down and rapid share, which is used for most videos, is really slow. Does that mean there is nothing i can do? Does icefilms update automatically? maybe for when that is fixed or do i have to do it manually? im sooooo sorry to bug i just really love icefilms and dont know anything about it. please help me manage it so i can keep enjoying the programs. Posted by leah | February 21, 2012, 5:25 pmWow, you really know your stuff! To an extent there is an issue with IceFilms which is why people have ported over to Navi – X. But there is a issue that is hard to diagnose when it comes to IceFilms. Is it currently laggy or is it your unit that has an issue.
Make sure you have auto update is on. (Where in System / add-ons / then video add-ons and use the left button and a side menu pops up and you just make sure its on)

If you are talking about it in general. You can’t see what you are typing. It’s designed that way. Just type it in carefully (Alpine) and hit enter. It will work.

Posted by Narinder | February 23, 2012, 5:11 pmWindows use Putty to make your SSH connection. Just follow the guide on how to do it in the blog post above and just search google for the Crackle and other Repo’s that you are looking for and install them the same way. (using WinSCP or equivalent)
Also, I try my best to answer questions as quick as possible but I ask for at least a 10 hour window to answer your questions (even though my average is much much less then that) as I am not always in front of my PC!

Sometimes its a software glitch, restart your P.C and if it doesn’t work still, reinstall it from a trust source file. (like the one in my link in the blog above)
90% of the time this fixes it. Another 9% using a different P.C fixes this issue. 1% I have no idea what’s wrong.
I’ve never hit the 1% yet…

It’s the same rumors and what not that you can read almost anywhere and I really haven’t bought anything from Apple or technology wise in awhile. (Waiting on the iPad3)
As for your issue, I don’t think its that big of an issue, there must be a file that is stuck somewhere. I’m sure if you reboot it, it will eventually forget it. Tech is random like that sometimes. If it really annoys you, sell your Apple T.V 2 and buy a new one, PROBLEM SOLVED!
LOL, just kidding. Just take out the power for about 10 minutes and plug it back in, a proper power cycle should fix that!

You can also sftp into it using any ftp client on your ipad by just switching the port to 22

I’m going to go start it up and see how it works. If I come across this issue I will see if there is a fix for it. Sorry about that. (It might take me awhile to find out the solution)

This occurs when i click create IPSW file, the jailbreak tethered option is not available. It wont jailbreak. I cant restore and update the ATV2 because then it update to ios 5 that was released March 7th, and there is no jailbreak for that. Thanks

When I click on any of them there is nothing there. I deleted Vevo as it wasn’t working. I have Blue Cop repository in my add on list but when I click it there are no add ons. Same for all of them. For your issue, you have to make sure you place it in the correct folder and then unzip it. Its in the blog above (the folder you place it in) and how to extract it.

There are ways around it, but I’m not sure if that is your issue. Just open putty with the i.p address, type in root hit enter and then alpine and then enter. (You won’t see alpine at all as it is hidden to protect people from behind you seeing it) If that still doesn’t work, just restart your P.C and your Apple T.V and try again. If that doesn’t work, uninstall Putty and reinstall it and try again. If that doesn’t work then come back and tell me and we’ll go from there!

However, the creator of that plugin went to a pay model and support for this has dwindled. Right now I’m just helping with the install and any help needed for it. if you can find your own plugin, just use the steps required to install the IceFilm Repo and it should work! IF you like you can also post the link to the repo that you use and others can benefit from your research!
